“How much does an EV cost per mile?” has no defensible answer until the charging mix is known. A driver who can charge overnight at home and a renter who relies on highway DC stations can own the same car yet pay very different energy costs.

The useful unit is the price of one mile under a stated mix: vehicle efficiency, charging loss, kWh share by channel and every fee caused by charging. The calculator keeps those assumptions visible so a search or answer engine can quote the conditions with the result.

Direct answer

An EV’s charging cost per mile depends on where its kWh come from, not the charger’s headline speed. Multiply vehicle consumption by annual miles, add energy lost between the meter and battery, price home, public AC and DC fast charging by their actual kWh shares, then add subscriptions and session or idle fees. In the example, a 70% home / 10% public AC / 20% DC mix costs about $1,118 a year or $0.093 per mile; charging the same driving entirely at home would cost about $634 or $0.053 per mile.

Formula

Battery kWh/year = miles/year × kWh/100 mi ÷ 100. Grid kWh/year = battery kWh × (1 + charging-loss rate). Weighted rate = home share × home $/kWh + public AC share × AC $/kWh + DC share × DC $/kWh. Annual charging cost = grid kWh × weighted rate + 12 × monthly membership + annual session/idle fees. Cost/mile = annual charging cost ÷ annual miles.

Worked example

Drive 12,000 miles at 30 kWh/100 mi. The battery needs 3,600 kWh; with 10% charging loss, the meter or network must deliver 3,960 kWh. A 70% / 10% / 20% mix priced at $0.16, $0.30 and $0.55 per kWh has a weighted energy rate of $0.252/kWh. Add a $10 monthly membership: annual cost is $1,117.92, or $0.093/mile. At the same loss and $0.16 home rate, home-only energy would cost $633.60.

Use marginal home electricity cost, not an average bill

The Department of Energy’s home-charging guidance identifies electricity price and vehicle efficiency as the core cost-per-mile inputs. Read the utility tariff and determine which additional kWh the vehicle will occupy: off-peak time-of-use, a higher consumption tier or a separate EV plan. Taxes or riders that increase with kWh belong in the rate; the fixed household charge usually does not unless the EV causes it.

Do not use a promotional “from” rate without its hours, season, demand terms and enrollment cost. A smart-charging schedule can move energy to a lower period, but only if the car is actually connected then.

Weight public charging by kWh, not by visits

A ten-minute DC stop may deliver more energy than several workplace sessions. Export session history when possible and divide annual kWh among home, public AC and DC fast charging. DOE notes that drivers normally pay more at public stations—especially DC fast chargers—than at home, but the exact account price still controls.

Record membership, connection, parking and idle charges separately. A $10 monthly plan adds $120 even before one kWh is delivered; compare that fee with the discount it actually earns over paid public energy.

Keep battery consumption and charging loss on different sides of the meter

Rated or dashboard kWh/100 miles commonly describes energy the vehicle uses. The electricity bill measures energy drawn. Cable, power electronics, battery temperature management and standby use create a gap, so this model adds a loss rate once. If your own wall-meter calculation already includes that gap, set loss to zero.

The base result of $0.093 per mile is not a U.S. average. It is the output of the published $0.16 / $0.30 / $0.55 rates and 70% / 10% / 20% mix. Change any of them before comparing the result with gasoline or a reimbursement rate.

Move the charging result into total vehicle cost
