The shelf label answers price per printed unit. Your budget needs price per usable unit. A large package can lose its advertised advantage through spoilage, an annual-fee allocation, delivery or extra freezer space.

A bulk pack is cheaper only when its effective unit cost is lower after spoilage, expiry, membership, delivery and storage. Compare usable quantity, not label quantity. In this scenario a small pack costs $5 for 1 unit with 5% waste, or $5.26 per usable unit. A 10-unit bulk pack costs $40, but 15% waste plus $2 allocated membership and $1 storage makes it $43÷8.5 = $5.06 per usable unit. Bulk saves only $1.76 across the usable 8.5 units; at 25% waste it rises to $5.73 and loses.

Usable quantity = label quantity×(1−waste%). Effective unit cost = (price+allocated membership+shipping+storage)÷usable quantity. Bulk savings for the bulk usable quantity = small effective unit cost×bulk usable quantity−bulk total cost. Use the same weight, volume or count on both sides.
Worked example
Small: $5÷(1×95%) = $5.26 per usable unit. Bulk: ($40+$2 membership+$1 storage)÷(10×85%) = $5.06. Buying the same 8.5 usable units in small packs would cost $44.74, so bulk saves $1.76—not the $10 suggested by sticker unit prices.
